Gaelic Games Invade Alexandria  from World Celtic Connection  (7 Aug 2009 11:57)
Mount Vernon Gazette - by Mark Giannotto Hundreds turn out to show support for fast-growing Irish sports. Philipos Melaku, 46, has worked for the Alexandria Parks and Recreation for 10 years now, but he witnessed a first within the makeshift wooden treehouse-like structure that serves as a scorer’s table on the playing fields of George Washington Middle School this past Saturday. He was working the scoreboard, keeping count as he had done for years supervising activities around the area, but on the grass in front of him there was no soccer or football game as the goalposts and net would suggest. Instead there were men and women - some with Irish accents - passing, dribbling, and even kicking a ball that should have been on a volleyball court through those uprights. This was Gaelic football; all part of an afternoon filled with Gaelic games straight from the Irish motherland and transplanted to here in Alexandria. “This is high action,” said Melaku from his pe ...

Can Government save a language  from World Celtic Connection  (5 Aug 2009 12:26)
Source: The Welsh Assembly Government The Welsh Assembly Government is currently seeking powers from Westminster in order to introduce new legislation, through an Assembly Measure, on the Welsh language. The Government is committed to ensuring that the Measure will confirm official status for both Welsh and English, would provide linguistic rights in the provision of services and would establish the post of Language Commissioner. During the week, there will be lots of opportunities for members of the public to be part of the discussion. Visitors to the Assembly Government stand will be asked to complete a short postcard survey, and there are several events to kick-start discussions. On Tuesday 4 August at 2pm in the Societies Pavilion, there will be an hour long Question and Answer session. Heritage Minister, Alun Ffred Jones will be joined by a panel of guests including Meri Huws, Chair of the Welsh Language Board and Menna Machreth, Chair of the Welsh Language Society. The s ...

Mixing Traditions: the World Fleadh  from World Celtic Connection  (4 Aug 2009 12:06)
Billed as Ireland’s biggest Irish and Celtic music festival, the fourth World Fleadh, which runs until August 8th, has decamped from Portlaoise, its home for the past two years, to Castlebar this year. Widening its scope to include folk and country, it is hosting what the organisers call “Ireland’s Music Awards” as well as the “Irish Country Music Awards”. As well as headliners Frankie Gavin and De Dannan, the week will see performances from the Sharon Shannon Big Band (Shannon pictured, right), the Kilfenora Ceili Band, The David Munnelly Band, Moving Hearts, Cherish the Ladies and Pauline Scanlon. How to get through Irish immigration  from World Celtic Connection  (3 Aug 2009 11:53)
The IrishCentral guide to safely navigating Irish immigration By KELLY FINCHAM Two big stories have prompted us here at IrishCentral.com to create a easy guide for tourists going into Ireland. Both the Plano 3 and a travel writer were banned from Ireland after inadvertently raising red flags at Irish immigration. One tourist did not know the address of the place where he was staying and the other did not have a return ticket and no proof of an intending return. As someone who can barely summon the vocabulary to order a cup of tea after flying through the night I can only sympathize with those who need their wits about them at 6am! The key thing is to be able to demonstrate to the officer in charge that you have no intention of overstaying your welcome. You need to know where you’re staying, how long you’re staying for and how you are going to pay for it all. It’s no different in Ireland than it is in the U.S. or Australia, two countries that I have been lucky e ...

Irish myths made easier: Podcast and comics bring ancient tales to life  from World Celtic Connection  (31 Jul 2009 12:31)
Examiner.com Samantha Gillogly If you’ve ever tried tackling a work of epic literature, from Beowulf to the Iliad, you may know that feeling of glazing over at the confusing web of characters and events that sprawl across the pages like so many constellations in the night sky. For those interested in Irish culture, understanding the narratives of the ancient Celts can be frustratingly overwhelming. But with the right introduction to the subject, it can become a rewarding, informative, and entertaining experience. Besides a simple runic script used for marking monuments, the ancient Celts had no form of written word. Thus, their bards committed the legends of their people to memory, performing these stories to a hall of patrons during the long, dark winter months. The mythic cycles have reached us only through careful transcription by early Irish Christian monks. Later, 19th-century writers such as Lady Augusta Gregory reworked the stories for the audience of their day. But ...
