Host of the occasion, May McKerrell said: “It was a fantastic day, we had over 2,000 people which was more than we’ve ever had before.” In the build-up to the gathering, which is now in its 12th year, a civic reception was held in July along with a Burns dinner. On Friday at Dumfries’ Minerva Hall there was a fiddlers concert with the Border Strathspey and Reel Society accompanied by William Williamson and friends. Get ready for the Festival!  from World Celtic Connection  (12 Aug 2009 11:29)
The Sunday Herald As Edinburgh prepares to Transform itself into the UK’s cultural centre, arts correspondent Edd McCracken talks to two of the main players MILLS: AFTER the credit crunch we need a new Enlightenment Following the financial meltdown, the loss of faith in political parties and a distrust of scientific breakthroughs, Scotland and the world are in need of a new Enlightenment, according to the artistic director of the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF). On the cusp of his third year in charge, Jonathan Mills also hit back at those who have criticised the festival’s omission of Robert Burns from the programme in the 250th anniversary of his birth, and the decision to open with Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus, written in celebration of the Duke of Cumberland’s victory over the Jacobites at Culloden. In keeping with shaping his festival programmes around a theme, Mills has chosen the Enlightenment as the central topic for this year. He said it was a ...

Brecon Jazz bounces back to a sound future  from World Celtic Connection  (11 Aug 2009 14:40)
Wales Online IT ALMOST didn’t happen at all. But after three sun-kissed days this year’s scaleddown Brecon Jazz Festival has been hailed as a resounding success. The world-renowned festival, which was to have been postponed this year due to financial problems, went ahead on a reduced scale after a rescue operation. Up to 20,000 visitors were expected to be attracted to the festival at the weekend. In the end many more people flocked to the town for the celebration of jazz. After celebrating its 25th anniversary last August, the festival fell into receivership and its future was in jeopardy. But it was pulled from the brink by a team headed by Peter Florence, the man behind the hugely successful Hay Festival. They turned the festival into a crowd-pleaser by securing some of the jazz world’s biggest names to perform in the Mid Wales town. Mr Florence, who wanted the festival to focus on “jazz not booze,” said the support shown this year had ensure the ...
