The New York Times “Little Gem,” the debut play by Elaine Murphy, has won the annual Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the award’s organizers said. The winning play, about three generations of women in an Irish family, was presented by the Guna Nua Theater Company in Dublin and the Civic Theater of Ireland. It will be produced at the Flea Theater in TriBeCa in January and will be part of the Under the Radar Festival. To be eligible for this award, a show must be an original work not previously performed in New York, and must receive a four- or five-star review from the newspaper The Scotsman. Last year’s winner, “Eight” by Ella Hickson, was performed at P.S. 122 in New York and at Trafalgar Studio in the West End and is scheduled for the Ringling International Arts Festival in Sarasota, Fla., in October.
Bishop and McCrea among Glengarry Highland Games competitors  from World Celtic Connection  (28 Aug 2009 12:15)
The Victoria Star It’s as close to Scotland as you can get without crossing the Atlantic. The Glengarry Highland Games held in Maxville, Ontario, is saturated with all things Scottish and it attracts participants from across North America and beyond. Heavy athletics participants Dirk Bishop of Perth-Andover and Wendy McCrea of Caldwell Brook were among them. This was Bishop’s sixth year at Glengarry while it was the first time McCrea had an opportunity to compete. The athletes noted that while Maxville is a small town with only a few hundred occupants, it swells considerably for the Glengarry Highland Games with 25,000 and 30,000 gathering in the stands to watch events like the caber toss, the sheaf toss and many other Scottish activities from band competitions to sheep herding. “It was truly amazing to see and experience,” McCrea noted of her initial impressions. “There was always a band playing and dancers on stage. (There was) definitely a Scotti ...

Irvine, Doyle team up to keep the Irish song tradition alive  from World Celtic Connection  (27 Aug 2009 12:42)
by Paul Keating at Irish Central The Irish song tradition is a vital component in keeping the mother lode of our Irish heritage and collective memory alive from generation to generation. As part of the folk culture it is very important to have sympathetic stewards who carefully tend to it in their own time and willingly share their gifts and repertoire with those who have an ear and a “gra” (love) for it. That oral tradition is being well served today by many modern-day interpreters, and coming up this September are some marvelous opportunities to observe the folk process in action from older musician to younger sustaining this very important aspect of the Irish music continuum. The Irish Arts Center in Manhattan begins its autumn season with one of its strongest initiatives in its long historic tenure as the home for Irish culture in Hell’s Kitchen, once known for less savory Irish activity in bygone eras. The second edition of its innovative Masters in Col ...

Knight?s Body Found at Stirling Castle  from World Celtic Connection  (25 Aug 2009 11:57)
BBC News Archaeologists believe that bones discovered at Stirling Castle may have belonged to a knight killed in battle or during a siege in the early 1400s. It is thought that despite the warrior’s relatively young age of about 25, he may have suffered several serious wounds from earlier fights. Researchers thinks it is also possible he may have been living for some time with a large arrowhead in his chest. The bones were discovered in a chapel at the castle in 1997. They were excavated when archaeologists were working in an area of the castle which turned out to be the site of a lost medieval royal chapel. Peter Yeoman, from Historic Scotland, said because the man was buried at the heart of a royal castle, it was indicative he was a person of prestige, possibly a knight. Some research was carried out on the skeleton at the time of its discovery, but a lack of technology meant it was difficult to assess the remains in more detail. Since then scientists have been able t ...
