Independent.ie Tipperary bore the brunt of some strange refereeing decisions, writes Dermot Crowe A GREAT many factors govern the outcome of an All-Ireland hurling final, but one specific incident will forever be associated with last Sunday’s meeting of Kilkenny and Tipperary. After all the exciting and dramatic curves in the narrative, a hotly-contested penalty award qualified as the turning point, the moment when Tipperary’s resistance snapped. They looked to have absorbed the loss of Benny Dunne (we will never truly know) but the penalty decision, and the characteristically punishing blow from Henry Shefflin that followed, finished them. There was always the potential of a late Kilkenny raid and their royal options on the bench had already been exercised to good effect. Martin Comerford provided much needed physical presence in the half-forward line where Tipperary had established a stranglehold after half-time, ruling Kilkenny in the skies. Comerford altered that pat ...
Denver Ireland Travel Examiner - Michael Thompson I do love traveling, with or without children. But it’s kind of like taking a kid fishing. It’s a very different experience from just going fishing yourself. Don’t go into it with the same expectations you’d have by yourself or with a group of adults. Select activities that the whole family can enjoy. And be sure to plan your itinerary with more down time than you might otherwise. Kids are easily tired, bored and distracted. Dragging them from one museum to another will not be a pleasant experience for them, and they’ll make sure you don’t enjoy it either. Children will put up with some activities that are more adult-oriented if you reward them with some kid-friendly ones too. Enjoying each other is just as important as enjoying what you’re doing. and plug in some time for a nap, a game of cards, or just time when they can play their video game or listen to their music. If you’re on ...

The Irish Emigrant Cats Make History With Four In Row Kilkenny 2-22 Tipperary 0-23 Kilkenny completed their four-in-a-row of All-Ireland senior hurling titles with a magnificent 2-22 to 0-23 victory over Tipperary in a thrilling final at CrokePark on Sunday. The Munster champions stood toe-to-toe with the holders throughout but lost the match right at the death when Henry Shefflin (penalty) and substitute Martin Comerford pounced for two killer goals inside a minute. With eleven minutes left, 14-man Tipperary led by three points but the Black & Amber produced a grandstand finale to ensure their place in hurling folklore. The award of the 63rd-minute penalty was contentious as the initial indiscretion seemed to take place outside the area, but there was also contact inside. Eoin Kelly scored 0-13 for the losers, for whom Lar Corbett was also brilliant. Paul Curran was impressive at the back while the sending off of Benny Dunne within moments of his second-half introduction wa ...
Fox4kc.com KANSAS CITY, MO - Organizers saw record-breaking crowds flock to Crown Center for Irish Fest this weekend. Many of the performers were young adults and teenagers, who are the future of keeping the Kansas City tradition alive. For the girls from the O’Riada School of Dance, Irish dancing is a way of life. “I started when I was about five, and I think it’s fun because it’s more unique than most dances,” said Lindy Lloyd. “The music is fun.” While most girls their age are taking tap and ballet, Irish dancing for them is the road less traveled. “It’s pretty difficult,” said Ellen Welander. “I guess you have to think of a lot of things at once, like crossing your feet, being on your toes, getting your clicks high, so you really have to remember all that and do it on the stage.” Next to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, performing at the Irish Fest is the highlight of the year. “I love it, ...
By Deborah Deasy, TRIBUNE-REVIEW You might be Welsh and not know it. A last name that sounds like a first one — Thomas, Williams, Richards, Roberts or Davis, for example — betrays Welsh blood in many Americans’ family trees. “They intermarried with anyone that was around,” says Nancy Gulliford of Natrona Heights, whose ancestors include people from Wales named Evans. “They came in waves.” Expect a wave of their descendants to arrive today in Pittsburgh for the 78th North American Festival of Wales at the Hilton Hotel, Downtown. The annual event, hosted this year by the St. David’s Society of Pittsburgh, features hymn singing — a favorite Welsh pastime — and a smorgasbord of culture from the rugged land of leeks, daffodils and sheep. “There is a great love and history of music and poetry in the Welsh language,” says Stacy Evans, executive director of the Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu Association, based in Granvill ...

Irish Times - GAVIN CUMMISKEY at Croke Park A FEW statistics jump off the page (well, something was needed after such a boring game to liven up the reaction). Meath hit 40 long kicks, most of them aimlessly into a hardly-soaring full-forward line, to Kerry’s 19. The masters opted to keep it simple with 149 hand passes to Meath’s 80, and 74 solo runs to Meath’s 46. No statistic can mask the simple fact that the football championship has been atrocious in 2009, leaving it in desperate need of a thrilling All-Ireland final. There was a depressing air of inevitability once Darren O’Sullivan’s poorly-struck penalty - he slipped on contact - found its way past Paddy O’Rourke. There was three minutes on the clock. The same number of counties can make a genuine claim at attaining the Sam Maguire Chalice in the current climate - Kerry, Cork and Tyrone come next year. The rest seem miles behind on any given Sunday. “Look it, we were poor,” admi ...
