St. Catherine’s Standard - Tiffany Mayer The most surprising revelation about Johnny Reid just three days after the singer cleaned up the Canadian Country Music Awards isn’t his humility. It’s his voice. Thick with a Scottish brogue, there’s not a twinge of twang in it. In fact, at first blush, little about Reid seems country, save for the hardware piling up in his trophy case and that the Scottish-born, Toronto-raised vocal powerhouse has transplanted himself in Nashville. His fans are called the Tartan Army. He’s been labelled a cross between Joe Cocker and a sexier Rod Stewart. His musical influences include the soulful Wilson Pickett. But really, going country wasn’t a stretch for Reid. “I’ve never tried to be anything but myself and I think people recognize that. I’m very truthful, I wear my heart on my sleeve and I’m not afraid to say how I feel. I sing simple songs that are very, very deep in their simplicity and ...
Sacramento Bee - Mel Shields Reno’s Artown is celebrated during the month of July, but that doesn’t mean its events are limited to just those 31 days. Some artists who participated in the past wanted to return in July, but their schedules wouldn’t permit it. No matter. Allowances are made, so a few special attractions are sprinkled throughout the remainder of the year. That’s what brings the Chieftains to the Grand Sierra on Friday. They’ve played sold-out Artown venues before. Few groups appeal so much to lovers of Irish music, and no group delivers it with such doses of whimsy and joy. Formed loosely in 1962 and becoming pretty solid around 1975, the Chieftains have become the most popular purveyors of mainstream Irish music in the world. They’ve won six Grammy Awards, have been named Ireland’s musical ambassadors, and continue to stick to the pure sounds of the island’s music in their mostly instrumental sound. When they first ...

Independent.ie - By Martin Breheny WHEN Tadhg Kennelly sat down in his house in Sydney with a sheet of paper, a biro and a dream, he knew what was coming next. He drew a line down the middle of the page, wrote the ‘pros’ on the left and ‘cons’ on the right before carefully measuring them against each other. It required a very short assessment. Financially, the smart thing to do was remain in his AFL career with the Sydney Swans but, emotionally, the only option was to follow his heart. After 10 years in Australia , he would pack his bags and return to Kerry to follow his dream of emulating his late father, Tim, and brother Noel by winning an All- Ireland medal. On Saturday, July 19, this year, Kennelly sat in the dug-out in Austin Stack Park , Tralee , watching Sligo corner-forward David Kelly lining up a penalty a few minutes from the end of a third round qualifier tie. A goal would have given Sligo the lead — and quite p ...

By ANTOINETTE KELLY, IrishCentral.com Guy Ritchie has revealed that his favorite music tops anything his ex-wife Madonna sings. The British director plays guitar in an Irish ceili group at the London pub he bought with the pop superstar last year, The Punch Bowl. “A good music session with these Irish lads is unbeatable,” he said. “Better than any Madonna concert or anything.” Ritchie’s dig at his ex-wife is part of a new interview with GQ magazine, which named the Englishman Film-Maker of the Year as part of its Men of the Year Awards. Ritchie’s Irish band features an accordion, fiddle, banjo and guitar. The group performs Irish classics such as “Irish Rover” and “The Black Velvet Band” at their regular shows at The Punch Bowl. The band has been joined with the likes of Justin Timberlake when the singer visited London in July. “You never have as good a laugh as you do in a pub,” Ritchie says, and then appe ...
The Comet A COLLECTION of Roman, Bronze, and Iron Age artefacts discovered in Comet Country has been hailed as a “rare” and “significant” find. The items, which were originally dug up from a site near Ashwell in 2003, include the silver base of a Roman figurine, pieces of armour dating back to the Iron Age, and hundreds of coins and bone fragments. At an inquest held at Hertfordshire Coroner’s Court in Hatfield yesterday (Thursday), coroner Edward Thomas declared the items treasure. Archaeologist Gilbert Burley, from North Herts Archaeological Society, told the inquest that the items were excavated following the discovery of the original Ashwell hoard in 2002. He said: “Treasure hoards of this nature are very rare things, and the Ashwell hoard is the first of its kind excavated for 200 years. “After the discovery of the initial hoard, we at the North Herts Archaeological Society carried out further excavations over the following four ...
