A Rat Packer with pluck  from World Celtic Connection  (8 Dec 2009 12:06)
One of Canada’s most respected fiddlers can also do a pretty good Dean Martin impersonation By Jason Schneide It’s often hard for Aaron Solomon to say who he actually is from night to night. He could be Dean Martin, or he could be Hank Williams, depending on the show in which he’s performing. But on Saturday Solomon will get to be himself when he plays fiddle again with singer/guitarist Sandy McDonald, a duo that was a fixture on the K-W club scene during the earlier part of this decade. Solomon says that despite his hectic schedule as both an actor and session musician in Toronto, he jumped at the chance to play with McDonald again, someone with whom he says he shares a unique musical rapport. “Sandy knows about half the songs ever written and I think I know the other half, so between the two of us we were always able to do pretty much any request,” Solomon says. It’s been almost eight years since the pair has done a show in town, something Solom ...

Fit for queen: Seeing Scotland aboard Royal Scotsman  from World Celtic Connection  (30 Nov 2009 19:55)
By Patti Nickell Lexington Herald-Leader (Lexington, Ky.) History tells us that Queen Victoria became so enamored of Scotland’s beauty while traveling by train across the country that she decided she must have a castle there. Hence, Balmoral was added to the list of royal residences. Sadly, I wasn’t in the market for a Scottish castle, but I was about to follow in Victoria’s footsteps by taking a rail journey through the country. Because I would be traveling aboard the elegant Royal Scotsman, it was a safe bet that I would enjoy the same standard of service and luxury that Victoria did. If the boarding process was any indication of what was to come, I’d say even a queen would be impressed. On an overcast October afternoon at Edinburgh’s Waverley Station, my fellow guests and I were ushered aboard the train by Sue, our gracious hostess, to the accompaniment of a kilted bagpiper. Once settled in the observation car, we were invited to nibble on smoked salm ...

Seylan Baxter (cello) and Cheyenne Brown (harp)  from World Celtic Connection  (3 Nov 2009 11:39)

Cello and Harp  from World Celtic Connection  (3 Nov 2009 11:37)
Capenews.net I “met” Scottish folk cellist Seylan Baxter through another blog I write about my cello-playing adventures a couple of years ago when she commented on my posts about attending Scottish fiddle camp. She sent me a copy of her cello and harp CD, “2:40″ (with harpist Cheyenne Brown, originally from Alaska, but now living in Scotland), and I was an immediate fan. The name of the CD refers to the 2 performers, and the 40 strings they play. So, when I learned they would be relatively close, at the Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland, Rhode Island, on their first U.S. tour, I drove the 70 miles to see them. It was a dark and stormy night, and I could barely find my way home through the torrential rains after the show, but it was a concert well worth seeing; I loved every minute of it. I find it hard to describe Scottish folk music; it is fiddle music, Celtic music, but with an earthiness to it (perhaps the cello), a solidness and rustic flavor that ...
