The Meaning and History of Celtic Knot Designs  from World Celtic Connection  (8 Jul 2009 12:02)
WhichEngagementRings.com Countless people all over the world find the signs and meanings of Celtic jewelry designs beguiling and like to have a collection of gold or Celtic knot silver jewelry. There are many lovely pieces of jewelry depicting Celtic knots and other Celtic designs and it can be absorbing collecting jewelry with either a specific type of shape, for instance the triquetra, or a set including all styles and designs. It can provide more significance to your collection if you appreciate something regarding the history and tradition of the Celtic people who used these designs in their daily life on their jewelry and everyday items. Though meanings of Celtic knot designs are, in general, vanished to us, nonetheless a great deal is recognized regarding the history of the Celtic people. The time of Celtic history dating from around 600 AD. in Great Britain after the Roman Era, known as the Insular Art period, saw an outburst of jewelry crafting. Artisans used precious meta ...

Dublin dream that Lar built  from World Celtic Connection  (6 Jul 2009 12:12)
The Independent - by Dermot Crowe Under Lar Foley, Dublin’s hurling class of ‘91 came closest to unseating Kilkenny, writes Dermot Crowe. FOR a few short years a group of hurlers wore the Dublin shirt with requisite honour and distinction to lay a few bogeys, win a few friends, even influence a few people. They were guided by a legendary force of nature, Lar Foley, an uncompromising personality for whom Dublin hurling abandoned its chains and temporarily joined the free world. They didn’t win anything of lasting significance but they were a key player in the plotline of Leinster’s hurling narrative around the turn of the 1990s. The GAA hadn’t fully embraced the modern communications age in a country then under the spell of Jack Charlton’s team. The capital’s hurlers passed through almost unnoticed. Yet they came close, the width of a post, to winning a first provincial title since Foley’s own playing days in 1961 when, in their sec ...

Dowd On Drinks: Tasting A History Of Scotland  from World Celtic Connection  (3 Jul 2009 12:55)
Falls Church News Press - By William M. Dowd - Thursday, 02 July 2009 SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — In the wooded hills above the Glenlivet factory complex in the Scottish Highlands, the view is of history and modernity blending as smoothly as the whisky produced by Scotland’s oldest licensed distillery. On two marked trails, one used by distiller George Smith and one by smugglers of illicit whisky, I got a sense of the laborious work and persistence that has always gone into the making and distributing of the storied spirits of Scotland. From enduring onerous taxes levied by the British crown to battles over operating illegal stills to internecine battles between rival smugglers and distillers has come today’s major industry that is second only to North Sea oil drilling as far as revenue is concerned. The Glenlivet region, a valley in the Speyside area of Scotland, has for centuries been a leading producer of non-peated whiskies — single malts and blends wit ...

Teen steps into tattoo in Scotland  from World Celtic Connection  (1 Jul 2009 12:26)
Queensland Times - Melanie Maeseele JEMMA McCarthy has been dancing since she was a tot, but even she is feeling a little anxious about her next big gig. The Redbank Plains teenager will fly to Scotland next month to perform at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in front of the Queen and a worldwide TV audience of millions. Jemma is one of Australia’s top highland dancers, but says nothing she has previously achieved will match stepping on to the historic stage in Scotland. “I am excited, but I must admit I’m feeling pretty nervous too,” the 15-year-old said. “The experience will be great and I’m really looking forward to it.” Jemma will join only 45 other dancers from throughout Australia who will be performing at the tattoo. The ambitious and talented dance student has been performing with her dance instructor Lynelle McAtee since the age of four. Ms McAtee, who has more than 37 years of experience teaching highland dancing, began mentoring J ...
