Hi, I'm trying to find some information on my Great, great, great grandfather Michael James Day.  The only information I have is his name.  He had a son, Michael Day who was born circa 1837 in Limerick or Waterford Ireland.  I have no information on Michael James' wife/son Michael's mother.

Michael James & his son migrated to Australia (no mention of a Mrs Day), I'm guessing arriving in Sydney - I don't know when.  The only other thing I know about Michael James is that he could have originally been either O'Day or O'Dea.  I remember a story of how our family's name changed following a falling-out between two brothers.  Our family dropped the O' prefix as a result.

Son Michael ended up in the Tenterfield area of New South Wales, marrying Clara Leis.  Michael was a violinist & butcher, he died on 22 March 1918.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Nathan Day

Hi Nathan,
I had a bit of a look around for you, although I am not sure how much other information you have.
Looked at assisted and unassisted immigration into NSW, Victoria and Queensland, under all variations (O') Day, (O')Dey, (O')Dee, (O')Dea, both with and without the O', to no avail.  There are plenty of these surnames on shipping records, but with no christian name, just Mr or Master etc., so they could have also been recorded this way unfortunately.

Michael married Clara "Leiss" in 1873 in Tenterfield under the name of "Dey".  You are probably aware of this, but I am wondering if you have a copy of this marriage certificate (No 4047/1873), as this should generally give the parents names and other information, such as place of birth, although the Irish quite often just recorded this as "Ireland", which is useless to us.  If the parents names are not on the marriage certificate, which is the case in earlier years in NSW, you can go to the church and request them.

You most likely know that Michael and Clara had the births of their first 4 children registered in Tenterfield (with NSW Registry) - Charles Michael 1875, Rose 1877, Catherine 1879 (mother's name given as Sarah, rhymes with Clara?) and John 1882.  The remaining 6 were registered in Queensland - Hugh 1884, Louisa 1885, George 1888, Michael 1890, Clara 1893 and Elma 1896.
Clara Emily Day died in QLD in 1926, aged 71 years, born NSW, duaghter of Charles Leis and Mary

There are other Days in Tenterfield too.
James Richard Day and Jessie Duffield had 6 children - Frederick 1886, Reginald 1888, James Richard 1890, Sarah M 1894, Alice M 1903 and Charles TR 1907.  James died in 1922 in Tenterfield aged 79 years (born C1843) and Jessie died 1947, aged 79 years.  both are buried in Tenterfield Cemetery in the Church of England Section.

Also in the Tenterfield Cemetery (General section unmarked grave) is a Bridget Day who died in 1862 aged 49 years (born c 1813), daughter of John and Bridget.  I am wondering if there is a possibility that this is Michael Day's mother/wife of Michael James Day???

Do you know for sure that Michael's father arrived in Australia?  There do not appear to be many options for a death for him.  Some are:
Michael O'Dea died 1885 in QLD (1885/3696) son of John O'Dea and Bridget Crowett.
Michael O'Day died 1878 in Sydney (1878/775) son of Michael and Bridget
Michael Day died 1885 Armidale (1885/13299), so of Michael and Elizabeth.

Finally Clara Leis' parents Charles (d 31 Mar 1905, aged 77 years) and Rosina Barbara (d 26 Sept 1910, aged 82 years)are both buried in Tenterfield Cemetery, Old RC section Row 21 / Lot 35. Apologies if you already have this.
I hope some of this helps.  Feel free to contact me for any assistance as I have quite a large database of O'Dea (and variants) In NSW and some Qld.

Regards Anne
